When Dafne was just three months old, she was diagnosed with pneumonia and a heart murmur. Her family lives in the community of Colpani, Machupicchu, Cusco, more than four hours from the nearest hospital, where there were no doctors specializing in congenital heart disease.
Not knowing what to do and with a heart full of anguish, her mother sought help and found a haven of hope in Vidawasi. In our Children’s Health Citadel, she was received with affection, support, and quality medical care. Dafne’s case required complex surgery in Lima, and thanks to the support of our allies, she was able to be transferred and operated on in time.
Today, Dafne is healthy and back home with her family. Her smile symbolizes the reason why we work every day: to provide specialized and decentralized children’s health to those who need it most.
Like her, thousands of children in Peru are born each year with congenital malformations and do not receive timely care due to a lack of infrastructure and specialists. At Vidawasi, we continue to build the high-complexity pediatric surgery pavilion so that no child has to travel far in search of help.
You too can be part of this transformation. Join us and help us change more lives at www.vidawasiperu.org.
